SilkPilot is a tool to test distributed application components. The maker of SilkPilot is Segue, a provider of testing tools for the enterprise. Their family of Silk products includes other testing tools for various areas of Web, Java and distributed development. To test the functionality, I ran version 1.2.1 Professional. It utilizes a nonbundled ORB to provide the CORBA 2.2 distributed environment that's required. VisiBroker 3.4 (or higher) and OrbixWeb 3.2 (or higher) are supported by the product. ORBacus 3.1.3 (or higher) and BEA's WebLogic Enterprise are also supported, but it seems to be incomplete in certain places. SilkPilot is a Java 2 JFC application that's targeted toward Java 2, although with certain modifications it's possible to use it to script JDK1.x-based clients. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT, Solaris, HP and different UNIX operating systems. SilkP... (more)

Product Review: Progress Sonic MQ - JProbe ServerSide Suite, V2.5

The JProbe ServerSide Suite, version 2.5, consists of three related tools: a Profiler/Memory Debugger, a Threadalyzer and a Coverage product. All can use the LaunchPad to start profiling sessions against applications, applets and servlets, or use their built-in launch facilities Each product takes a different approach to making your Java code more solid. The Coverage tool helps test all source code paths, the Profiler/Memory Debugger is used during development and later during production to tune the code, and the Threadalyzer helps to identify (potential) locking/synchronization... Product Review: JFCSuite, v2.1

JFCSuite is a collection of visual beans based on JFC and complementing it. It fills in missing pieces in the JDK/JFC GUI libraries, namely, masked (number-only, all upper case, etc.) entry fields, date/calendar controls, various extensions (sorting) on JTable and more. All components support the Java Look and Feel (JLF) and are 100% Pure Java certified. Although the licensing is per developer, there are no runtime license fees when the library is used in commercial products. The product is also available with enterprise (priority) support bundled, which may be a good choice if t... (more)

Product Review: Spirit 1.0

The product was released in September 1998, but based on the information on the Web site, it's still undergoing development iterations. Spirit is a presentation builder environment based on JavaBeans. It provides an extensive set of Bean-based objects (images), presentation tool transitions and effects, and also has the ability to "script" its objects using Java standard Bean interaction conventions. The product itself is partially built using Spirit, and its UI shows proof of this by providing more of a graphics workshop interface as opposed to the GUI builder interface. Its in... (more)

Stylus 2.0

Stylus is an XML/XSL WYSIWYG editor developed by eXcelon Corp. (formerly Object Design, Inc.). I became interested in Stylus while reading about it in detail. There's a great selection of free and for-a-fee command- line tools in the XML/XSL arena, but not many related GUI tools that facilitate the creation of XML and XSL documents as a bundle. I ran the evaluation of version 2.0.05 on Win2K SP1, the product that's installed using InstallShield. It's integrated with MS Office and triggered the install of some additional Office features (mostly Internet Explorer-related features)... (more)
